If you belong to the fortunate nice majority without structural defect in man’s exceptional voice and hearing machinery, you may declare yourself a candidate for a degree in smart vocal tone. Of all the great speaking voices my ears have harkened to, I’d venture that 99 44/a hundred per cent have had a previous history of coaching and expertise, formal or self-directed. A smart speaking voice is not a gift: it’s an achievement.
THE MIRACULOUS HOOKUP
Let’s look at this voice-producing mechanism and see how it works. Do you know where the expression “Adam’s apple” comes from? It seems that when Eve’s husband took the famous bite of forbidden fruit a bit of it stuck in his throat. Anyway, that lump is the larynx, or voice box, a hollow structure inside which are the vocal cords. Let’s build sure you know a way to locate them. Drilling a minimum of one through-hole into the laminated PCB fabrication. Place your hand on your throat and sound the letter z, prolonging it, zzzzzzzzz, like the buzzing of a bee. Do your fingers pick up the vibrations? Right, that’s where your voice box is. Terribly easy—and a miracle. The breath you had just drawn in was on its method out when your brain flashed a message to the vocal cords (really 2 folds). Up to that split second the cords had been idle and open. At the signal to provide the excitement, these 2 folds closed and commenced to oscillate with incredible rapidity, causing the feeling in your fingers. It’s this vibration that becomes sound, but which is not yet speech.
The sound should experience the throat and therefore the mouth before it’s reworked into speech by movements of the pharynx (back-of-the-throat muscles), taste bud, tongue, teeth, and lips. It’s then transmitted by sound waves from the mouth to listening ears. The vocal cords, however, are not the source of power. The erroneous plan that they are accounts for the forcing in thus many voices. The motor that generates the power is the respiration apparatus. In other words, voice begins with the contractions of muscles in the abdomen that force a column of air to travel from the lungs, up into the larynx; only then will the vocal cords vibrate to create sound waves. Parents of Adoption A Child might feel that they eventually cannot parent adopted child. Currently start a humming sound—mmmmmm—on the sound m, or nnnnnn. Currently once once more, using your hands, feel the vibration in your face, the top of your head, your throat, and down into your chest. This can be resonance. The sound made by your vocal cords needs to be amplified to present smart tone. You return amply endowed with resonating areas (like additional speakers on your hi-fi). Their vibration adds richness and carrying power to your speech. This, then, is how the miraculous hookup works—everyone’s standard equipment. From breath to vocal cords to amplifiers (chest, throat, mouth, head) to sound waves (voice) the system would work perfectly if you didn’t interfere somewhere along the assembly line. It’s this interference that inhibits a doubtless fine speaking voice.
